The Empirical and Molecular Formulae Module

This module contains multi-step problems that require you to find the empirical and molecular formula of a compound by using percentage composition, mass composition, or combustion analysis data.

There is a database of about 720 compounds. This means there are about 720 problems that deal with % composition. For the mass composition and combustion analysis data, there is an unlimited number of problems since their data are generated at run-time.

Help for each step in the solution of the problem is available through the 'Help' Menu. Each help stage has its own interactive screen where you can enter the numbers that you have obtained for that part of the problem and have them assessed and find links to additional information on how to work that particular part of the problem. You can even 'Peek' at the expected answer for that stage of the problem.

The download demo version has more functionality than is possible in this web-page version.

This module also makes use of the Menubar to allow you to branch out to the 'practice' modules. You might want to spend some time on mass-mole calculations, for instance, or on significant figures. You can do this through the 'modules' menu or by going to the 'Related Skills' item in the Help menu for the module. Then, you return to the main problem when you have finished your practice.

Try out the program - it should have appeared in the area below.

About the buttons you will see on the screen ...

The 'New' button - generates a new exercise

The 'Using % Compn Data' button - sets up the program to begin selecting % Composition problems

The 'Using Mass Compn data' button - sets up for mass composition problems

The 'Using Combustion Analysis data' button - sets up for combustion analysis data

The 'Judge' button - click this to have your answer checked

The 'Peek' button - does not work in all screens in this demo since it often opens additional windows - but it shows the expected answers

The 'Text' and 'Hide Text' buttons - can be used to show and hide the Text reference

The 'Quit Practice' button - not active in this demo, it would return you to the CheMentor main menu

The 'Activity Menu' button - returns you to the menu for the module so that you can select another type of exercise

The 'Help Menu' - clicking on this opens the Help Menu and you can then select a Help screen for some stage of the problem
